Master of Science in Nursing Degree

Earn a master's degree in nursing with concentration in nursing education

Combining a unique blend of online courses and clinical experiences, the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) education program provides advanced degree options for BSN graduates. As an MSN student, you will have the opportunity to complete your master's in nursing education.

Our accredited MSN program is offered with plans of study to best fit your needs. You will work exclusively with your faculty advisor to develop a personalized plan of study.

MSN Degree Core Classes

All MSN students will take the following 18 hours of core classes:

  • NUR 5033 Concepts of Advanced Practice Nursing
  • NUR 5043 Ethics and Policy Issues in Advanced Practice
  • NUR 5083 Nursing Research
  • NUR 5123 Information Systems
  • NUR 5533 Statistics & Data Analysis for Nursing

Nursing Education

The nursing education track will prepare you for academic, staff development, and patient education roles. The program will provide you with an excellent foundation in nursing education knowledge, leadership, and evidence-based practice, as well as adult educational theory and teaching strategies.

The MSN degree is offered through SBU's Mercy College of Health Professions.

MSN Program Outcomes  

  1. Integrate skills in critical thinking, information management, and systematic inquiry into the advanced nursing practice role (Clinical Judgment). 
  2. Utilize advanced communication processes to influence health care, health care policy, and advanced professional nursing practice (Communication). 
  3. Synthesize knowledge from concepts, theories, principles and research in nursing in the planning and delivery of holistic evidence-based health care that is responsive to changing needs and societal trends for a multicultural population (Evidence Based Practice). 
  4. Assume leadership, responsibility and accountability for value-based decision-making in the advanced practice role (Professionalism). 
  5. Develop a conscious application and assimilation of the principles of Christian discipleship in the implementation of the advanced practice role (Christian Discipleship).  

Nurse Educator Track Outcomes   

  1. Integrate skills in nursing judgement to advocate for the provision of safe, compassionate, and culturally competent care to promote human flourishing from the perspective of an advanced practice nursing role. 
  2. Utilize interprofessional communication processes to influence health care, health care policy, and collaboration among advanced nursing roles. 
  3. Synthesize concepts, information technology, and research to formulate evidence-based systematic strategies to enhance the quality of health care, address social determinants of health, and respond to the changing needs of diverse populations.  
  4. Employ responsible legal and ethical practices using leadership principles and decision-making skills that demonstrate professionalism and integrity in the advanced nursing role. 
  5. Exemplifies servant leadership through a conscious application and assimilation of a Christian Worldview in the implementation of the advanced nursing role.

Admissions Information

Admission criteria:

  1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in nursing coursework. If the student's GPA is less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores may be required.
  3. Submission of the following documents:
    1. MSN Application 
    2. Official transcript(s) from all prior nursing programs. Transcripts must be sent directly to the College of Health Professions (Attn: Admissions/MSN)
  4. Records and/or requirements: (*Students accepted into the MSN program are required to submit the following records within designated time limits. Admission is conditional until records and requirements are met. Admission criteria are subject to change.)
    1. Current unencumbered RN license in state of residence/employment. Education regulations of the National Council of State Authorization for Distance Education may prohibit acceptance of applicants from certain states. See www.nc-sara.org for further details regarding states that are impacted.
    2. Current BLS certification
    3. Photo ID/driver's license
    4. Background screening including Family Care Registry
    5. Urine drug screening
    6. Immunization records (Tdap, TB, Varicella, MMR, annual influenza, Hepatitis B series)

Course Transfer Equivalency

Nine graduate semester hours completed at another regionally accredited institution may be transferred and applied to the degree. These credits must be comparable to courses offered at Southwest Baptist University and must be approved by the MSN Faculty and Dean. Southwest Baptist University maintains a current database of course transfer equivalencies from hundreds of accredited colleges and universities. Students are welcome to search for and find course equivalents for prerequisite courses and program requirements within the College of Health Professions degree programs.
